Match report by Richard Church
Our final game of the season saw the visit of Leverstock Green with Levvy knowing that only a win
would keep them up and send Kings Langley down instead.
The visitors had the ball in the net with 14 gone but the goal was disallowed for a foul on the keeper.
The ODs took the lead on 22 minutes. George had a free kick well saved by the keeper just before
getting a second opportunity from another free kick – this one was played in to the near post and
met with a superb header by Tali giving the keeper no chance.
Leverstock Green equalised on 28 from a well struck free kick by Kyle Connolly from the edge of the
box. Four minutes before half time AFC had a goal disallowed – this one was a close offside call. The
visitors took the lead just before half time. A corner from the right was headed out but it was played
back in towards the right and following a little bit of fortune, the ball was played back in and headed
in at the far post by Rawn Seale to give Levvy a 2-1 half time lead.
The second half was very edgy with the visitors not knowing whether to stick or twist with the
knowledge that the 2-1 win would be enough to keep them up. To be fair to them, they never really
sat back but lack of any real penetration or goal threat from AFC was just what they needed. Just as
we went in to time added, Levvy were awarded a free kick just outside the AFC box – the first effort
was charged down and the ball ended up at the feet of Sean Mooney who rifled the ball in to the net
to make it 3-1 and guarantee them a place of safety.
So another season over with a disappointing league position of 14 th – 9 points above the relegation
zone. 13 wins, 8 draws and 19 defeats, scoring 50 goals and conceding 68. Although we never really
looked like going up, we were never in any real danger of going down but that all goes out the
window as this season will always be remembered for the winning of the Beds Senior Cup for the
second time in the clubs history. A big thanks to all the players, staff members, volunteers,
supporters and sponsors – let’s do it all again next season – Champions of Bedfordshire, we know
what we are!
