Match report by Richard Church.
Both teams came in to this match struggling for form and both much too close to the bottom of the table. Another early season six pointer.
Before the game we had a minute’s applause for the Chairmans brother, Tom, the dearly missed Dad of our mascot Thomas who passed exactly one year ago today.
The game started very cagily and even with neither side creating anything in the way of a decent goalscoring opportunity. The first real chance came on 11 minutes with an attack from the visitors – the ball being played in to the area and a fiercely struck shot which was well blocked by Shawn. Flackwell began to exert a bit of pressure at this stage but failed to create any real efforts on the home goal. Their best opportunity in this period was a big ball played in to the area which was well dealt with by Matt with a well timed punch away to clear the danger.
Mid-way through the half AFC started to get back in to the game and had a few pot shots at goal but nothing to really worry the Flackwell keeper. On 26 minutes, a little contentious decision saw AFC awarded a free kick for a backpass which was played off the defenders knee. The defenders pointed out to the referee that kneeing the ball back to the keeper is not deemed a backpass in the laws of the game but he was adamant and the free kick stood – unfortunately for the home side nothing came of the free kick but an interesting discussion point.
Flackwell again took control of the game and on 28 they had a glorious chance to take the lead following a delightful through ball in to the box – their player low chipped the onrushing Matt with good technique but the ball just went past the post. Four minutes later Flackwell did get on the scoresheet following some hesitation and poor control from Abel in midfield. The ball was nicked off him and they played it in to the box for Juwon Akintunde to tuck the ball home for a 1-0 lead. Flackwell had a chance to double their lead just before half time when they broke down the left with Matt pulling off another fine save to push the ball to safety.
The second half started a bit brighter for AFC and a couple of half chances came and went in the first 20 minutes but nothing to trouble the visitors keeper too much. A couple of early sub changes in the half were made including the debut appearance of Adam Ahmad-Pearce – welcome to the club Adam.
As the half wore on, Flackwell started to take over the play with AFC struggling to get a foothold in the game. A few good chances for Flackwell were thwarted with good goalkeeping and one well timed headed clearance off the line by Shawn.
The heavens opened with about 15 minutes of the game to play – absolute torrential rain made conditions on the pitch difficult. Just before the 90 minutes were up, Matt made a foul on the visitors number 9 Charlie Bacon, who dusted himself down and drilled the resulting penalty straight down the middle giving Matt no chance. A 2-0 win for Flackwell was no more than they deserved – a bad day at the office for the ODs saw us drop back in to the relegation zone.
