Match report by Richard Church.
A very young AFC Dunstable team this evening produced a decent fighting performance in spite of what the scoreline might suggest. Biggleswade were definitely and clearly the better side but AFC made a game of it after a dreadful start.
As seems to be the way of late, a very sluggish start saw the visitors go 2-0 up early in the game. The first goal scored by Lynton Goss on 3 minutes and 7 minutes later Joshua Steele burst through midfield with no threat of a challenge and he drove the ball in to the corner. In between the goals Levi had an opportunity but his rather tame shot was straight at the keeper for an easy save.
As the half went on Biggleswade took full control of the game and it got more and more difficult for the AFC youngsters to get any sort of foothold but to their credit they kept the tempo up. Just after the half hour a breakaway by the home team down the right wing saw Avto cut in to the box and hit a shot which unfortunately went wide of the far post. On 36 Zack pulled off a fine save but could only push the ball out to an onrushing striker but fortunately for AFC he hit his effort well over the crossbar. AFC came back in to the game in the last 10 minutes of the half as they got the ball down and tried to play football. 0-2 at half time.
The second half started in very much the same way as the first half had ended with AFC taking the game to the visitors and putting them under a bit of pressure. A nice ball in from the right with five minutes gone was met by Levi at the far post but he couldn’t quite wrap his foot round it as he appeared to be a bit off balance and the ball was hit wide – very unlucky. A few minutes later Levi was the provider as he played a nice ball in to the box but Micah couldn’t quite get a telling touch and the ball went in to the hands of the grateful keeper. The home side kept up the pressure and on 64 minutes Micah had an opportunity with a lob shot but it just cleared the bar and landed on top of the net. If only one of those efforts could have found the back of the net.
A minute later we got hit with the sucker punch that effectively ended the contest in favour of the visitors. A ball in to the far post found the head of an unmarked Biggleswade striker and headed it back across the goal – Zack did well to get to the ball but could only push the ball straight to Lynton Goss who put the ball in the net for his second goal of the evening and give his side a 3-0 lead. Very much against the run of play and Biggleswade’s first opportunity of the half.
The game pretty much petered out after that but still time for a fine run through midfield by new skipper Ben Lynch just as we went in to added time saw his eventual shot straight at the keeper. We are not kidding ourselves – Biggleswade were the better team overall and fully deserved the points but one of our better performances of late.
Man of the match as nominated by the AFC committee was Levi Nicholson.
